Blog 4: Hunger in Kenya
The country that I chose for this week for my sustainable goal is Kenya. Kenya has a population of over 48.5 million and 35.6% of the population lives on less than $1.90 a day (World Food Programme, 2020). Kenya has been going through extremely difficult challenges over the years due to droughts, hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. 4.2% of the children are severely suffering from malnourishment and 26.2% are chronically malnourished. Between January to September 2019 it showed that climate change was a big factor in the causes of the issues that Kenya has been suffering through. Kenya has suffered through an increase of drought, food and nutrition insecurity, reduced water access, and increased child morbidity. In October extreme floods that were considered deadly affected thousands of its people, and disrupted health services, economic activities, and livelihoods. Soon after it only got worse in December when desert lotuses started to quickly spread which soon became a big threat for the country. It started to majorly impact pasture and water availability, crop cultivation, livestock reproduction, agriculture livelihoods, and food prices (Action Against Hunger, 2020).
Some ways that Kenya is getting help and fighting through these difficult times is by getting help from the Action Against Hunger organization. In 2019 they launched a drought response in order to support livelihoods. They also created a system where after a flood would hit the organization would provide health services that included screening and treatment of malnutrition, the spread of hygiene kits, basic goods, home water treatments, and restoration of critical water infrastructure. These methods have helped millions of people in Kenya be able to survive and get back on their feet (Action Against Hunger, 2020).
When it comes to cost the organization never states on how much it costs them to be able to fund their method of support for Kenya, however, it is believed that most of their money comes from non-profit donations. Food hunger and malnutrition is a big issue in Kenya and is one of their main priorities and are trying their hardest to decrease the number of people who suffer from it. With help from the organization Action Against Hunger, they are able to implement resources for improving the country. This shows the hard work and dedication the people of Kenya and the organization are willing to implicate in order to end the hunger and malnourishment that is happening in Kenya.
