Blog 2: Hunger in India

The country I chose for my Sustainable Development Goal is India. India is a country that has a population of over 1.3 billion people. Although there has been a major economic and industrial growth, there are over 189.2 million people in India who are undernourished. This means that the country is still unable to provide food for a large number of people in the country, specifically for women and children (India FoodBanking Network, 2020).

To reduce the number of people malnourished and provide more resources for food, an organization was created called The India FoodBanking Network. The India FoodBanking Network is an organization that has a goal of ending hunger in India by 2030. To make their plan successful, they plan on providing a minimum of one food bank in every district in India and plan to bring the government, private sectors, and NGOs to help fight hunger, malnutrition, and help provide information on how and where people can gain access to food. They also plan to partner with corporate sectors, leading development agencies, and local communities that are working to sustain the food banking movement in India (India FoodBanking Network, 2020).

Another way The India FoodBanking Network is trying to end hunger and malnutrition is by offering management solutions for excess food inventory and help food businesses save extra food products so they can help feed those that are in need. This way the organization is able to reduce food waste and provide a way for the food banks to have access to food. The organization never states how they are able to afford the costs for the cause but most of their resources are from non-profit organizations and donations. There is even a donation link in the site for people who want to contribute (India FoodBanking Network, 2020). If there was climate change, however, it could interfere with the amount of food that would be produced, since most of the food provided for the organization is agriculture-based, which needs a well amount of water and healthy soil for the food to grow more efficiently. The image shown below is children who are receiving food from their school. This shows that India takes hunger as the main priority for its people by how they try to use different methods to provide food.

  1. Hi Kalkidan,

The tragedy of hunger and starvation is depleted across the world, especially in a country like India. Though India is encountering major industrialization, many parts of their population do not have access to the accessible resources, especially foods. I am glad that you were able to put this blog together as you were able to inform us on how India is planning to treat the SDG by 2030 for their economy. I have never heard of the FoodBanking Network before, but it sounds like it will meet all implications to target hunger in India. That being said, is this a new organization ? Is it only effective for India, or does it also partner with other countries ? Is this organization provided to all of India, or the middle and low class areas ? It is nice to hear that organizations like the FoodBanking Network are able to supply in a variety of ways to reduce hunger and malnutrition within India’s population. I could also see how the connection between climate change can affect food storage and inventory. Because foods depend on weather and climate for nutrients and vegetation, it could have a drastic impact on hunger. I enjoyed reading your post and learning about how India is taking action on this dispute. I hope to get to know more information about the organization and hunger in other nations, too. Thank you for sharing.

  2. Hi Kalkidan,
Your choice of SDG is appreciable. The knowledge you provided about India working to eliminate hunger and starvation is very informative. Although, today's world have been developed much more better place to live with health facilities, technology, but hunger and starvation still is a big issue around the world. People were still dying cause of hunger and malnutrition. Many developing countries are struggling with food issues and dealing the problem with reduction in production of food, I think, one of the main reason is climate change or global warming is worsening the condition. In order to solve this problem, we as human being living this world should work together against huger and salvation. I'm glad to know that India is working with various NGOs , INGOs and India Food Banking Network to eliminate this issue. Thank for your post.

  3. Hunger and starvation is an issue in many low-income countries, especially in India. I am glad that you are bringing awareness to this issue and confirming that India is planning to eliminate hunger and starvation. Countries struggle with hunger because of the limited production of food due to climate change. I am not familiar with the FoodBanking Network, but it seems like a great organization based on their goal of ending hunger in India by 2030. I wonder does this organization work in other countries as well or mainly in India? I know these types of organizations work globally in different countries. However, I glad to know that India is actively working with various partners and stakeholders to eliminate the issue.

  4. Wow I found this super interesting! I didn't realize that India was also a country that is struggling with hunger. I just assumed that it is very well known and that its economy has to be in good shape so everyone's happy. You really made me open my eyes to the real world and look at the bigger picture. I am also doing Zero Hunger and so far I haven't heard of the FoodBanking Network but I really want to do more research on them to see what other countries they could be working with!

  5. Hi Kalkidan,
Through your blog I found out about India Foodbanking Network and I think that is amazing. I also researched india and now that they have a high poverty rate. If people do not have jobs they can not provide food to their children or spouse. However I love that India Foodbaking Network wants to help end hunger. It is also hard to understand how much climate plays a huge role. India needs good climate to be able produce food and is also part of their income.
